Tom Allen assesses Grand Slam Sunday which sees the Big Four all in action
50% here as both Man Utd and Arsenal won their respective matches with a 1-0 scoreline.
Sky are billing the two games involving the top four this weekend as ‘Grand Slam Sunday’ and for once I think the matches won’t disappoint.
Despite the obvious attacking talents that are always on show in games involving the top four, they more often than not fail to live up to expectations. I predicting goals on Sunday however and I also think there are two decent bets to be had.
I rarely get involved in these sorts of games but I think the bookies have underestimated the merits of the two away sides and I will be backing both Chelsea and Manchester United. Prices of 3.00 and above about them both is too high.
Anfield plays hosts to the first game at 1.30 and I expect Liverpool to be picked off by their great rivals. In Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez and Giggs, United have an irresistible attacking quartet and although the hosts will probably see more of the ball, I’m not sure they have as many match winners as the Champions.
John O’Shea scored a crucial injury time winner for the Red Devils last season in a 1-0 victory and it could be more of the same. Steven Gerrard is the obvious of threat for the home side but whether or not they have enough about them to break down United is open to debate and 3.00 about three points for Sir Alex’s side is definitely too large.
It is a similar story in the later game, where Arsenal host Chelsea, and I think that Avram Grant’s side represent a bit of value.
Grant has quietly gone about his business since the departure of the ‘Special One’ and he has made Chelsea very difficult to beat once again. They are, in fact, unbeaten under him and although Didier Drogba is missing through injury, they still have enough people to win them a game.
Arsenal started the season magnificently but recently I sense that the young guns might be feeling the pressure already and in mid-December that does not bode well. They were fortunate to edge past Wigan on their last game at the Emirates and were truly awful at the Riverside when beaten 2-1 by Middlesbrough.
Robin van Persie’s return is a welcome boost but I really fancy Chelsea to get something from the game and at 3.30 or thereabouts on Betfair, must be back.
