The top three all faced away matches with mixed results, and Wigan notched a great win
50% from Tom here, Arsenal did the business away at Man City 3-1, but Wigan were able to win an invaluable three points against West Ham.
A potentially pivotal weekend in the race for the Premier League crown as the top three all face tricky looking away games. Arsenal go to Eastlands, Manchester United are at Spurs and Chelsea, still very much in it, travel to Fratton Park.
Chelsea, with the acquisition of Nicolas Anelka, were the only one of the three to add to their squad during the transfer window but his arrival could be key. He’s fitted in very well so far and looks a natural replacement for Didier Drogba while he is on internationally duty. I fancy them to get all three points, but it certainly won’t be easy against Harry’s men and new boy Jermain Defoe will be keen to impress on his debut.
Chelsea’s trip to Pompey looks significantly easier than Manchester United’s visit to White Hart Lane however and Sir Alex Ferguson’s side will need to be right on their game to register a win. They were outplayed for large parts of the FA Cup tie between the two last Sunday and, although United swept past Portsmouth on Wednesday night, didn’t look the sharpest in front of goal. 2.00 is probably the right price about an away win however and I’d only be a layer at odds on.
At similar prices to United and Chelsea, Arsenal head north to take on Manchester City and, despite the hosts excellent form at home, I think they are a decent bet.
Sven himself has admitted that he is concerned about his players "mental fitness" at present and if that is indeed the case then a game against Arsenal is the last thing that his men need. The Gunners have started to play like they did in the early weeks of the season over the last month or so and consecutive 3-0 victories over Newcastle were done in most emphatic fashion. Emmanuel Adebayor Richard Dunne is back in top form and, while will have his hands full with him, there are plenty of threats from elsewhere.
Away from the top three, one more bet catches my eye this Saturday and I think Wigan can be taken on confidently when they host West Ham. I was successful in opposing them at Middlesbrough on Tuesday and I think the Hammers will return home with at least a point. They will have been boosted by their 1-0 win over Liverpool in midweek and have an excellent record on their travels in the top flight this term.
