Wigan beat West Brom 2-1 with a late goal, as tipped by us
A thundering late header from Emerson Boyce handed Wigan the full three points as they beat WBA 2-1 at the JJB
Two fantastic games to look forward to on Sunday, with the Manchester derby and a top of the table clash at Stamford Bridge, and it is certainly a day to stay in front of the TV.
Manchester United will do well to get the better of bitter rivals City in the big early game, they have a poor recent record against The Citizens, but really need a win to keep in touch with Chelsea and Liverpool at the top. I expect Scolari’s side to bounce back from a disappointing effort in Bordeaux to beat Arsenal while Liverpool should be able to record another win on Monday night. They face West Ham at Anfield.
The action on Saturday looks particularly tricky this week, any stakes should be kept to a minimum, but there appears to be some value in siding with Wigan at the JJB in their clash with West Brom. The Baggies have started to become detached at the bottom, they are four points away from safety and without a win in seven look short of ideas.
Much was made of the fact that Tony Mowbray’s men were keen to keep playing the attractive football that gained them promotion from the Championship but the truth is that it hasn’t worked and now must be the time for a new tactic. Fellow new boys Stoke and Hull have adapted well with their unique styles but the Baggies have become a soft touch and Wigan can take full advantage.
It’s nearly a month since West Brom found the net, when strikes from Roman Bednar and Ishmael Miller were good enough for a point against Blackburn at the Hawthorns, but they lack a striker that can be relied upon to consistently score goals and are also without a clean sheet in seven. Wigan have started to find their form and one goal may be enough for the hosts to prevail on Saturday. Their opponents have scored just twice on their travels all season and look in real trouble.
I had high hopes for Steve Bruce’s side at the start of the campaign and while it hasn’t quite happened for them yet I think they could be be about to put a decent run together. It’s now four games in the top flight without defeat, including excellent wins over Portsmouth, and more recently Everton, and in Emile Heskey and Amr Zaki they have a strike force to cause any defence problems. Zaki has been the find of the season in the Premier League and if he and the England forward can stay fit then Wigan should be aiming for a top half finish.
Wigan’s better efforts have come on the road so far this season, in contrast to recent years when they have excelled on home soil, but the 1.80 on offer looks generous and is the bet to be had.
