Premier League Darts Week 6

The Tungsten Tipper was right in predicting that Phil Taylor would power home

Raymond van Barneveld vs Mervyn King

Week 6 of the Premier League darts takes place at the MEN Arena in Manchester and kicks off with two of the big guns and potentially the best match of the night, Raymond van Barneveld vs Mervyn King. The tournament sponsors Boylesports went first with the weeks’ prices chalking King up at 2-1 which looked a big price given the form he has shown in the first five weeks. A flow of cash has seen King’s odds cut to 8-5, with the Irish layers remaining the standout price.

On a couple of occasions in the Premier League Barney has disappointed me with his attitude. Against Taylor in week one he threw in the towel when going behind. Up against Mardle last week a couple of arrows were thrown nonchalantly in an almost couldn’t care less manner. Barney’s hunger looks to be in question. He came back after a three month sabbatical in October of last year looking refreshed and sharp but since being hammered in the World Championship Final by Taylor his head seems to have dropped again. His 3 dart average is still clearing 100 and he also has the Indian sign over King with the head to head score ten-four in his favour.

This is a different King though as he has never looked happier on the big stage, rattling in a spectacular seven maximums last week when getting a draw against Taylor. King is one of the few players of recent times who has shown he is not intimidated on the same stage as the fourteen time World Champion.

Jelle Klassen vs John Part

Jelle Klassen is in the 2nd match-up against John Part having collected no points in the last 4 League games. He must pick up his game to begin to justify the wildcard selection he was given for the Premier League, which raised eyebrows in the darting world. Jelle will be able to play at his own pace this week as Part won’t try to slow him down as he plays the board and not the opponent.

On the two occasions they have met Part has been victorious both times. Both players are not in the best of form only just averaging above 90 and their average maxiums thus far are also falling below the bookmakers lines. A plus for Part backers is the fact he hasn’t spent time travelling to Canada and back this weekend electing to play in the 2 players championships in Scotland. That never met with much success, as he only reached the last 32 on both days.

James Wade vs Terry Jenkins

Third up is James Wade against Terry Jenkins. Terry is consistently inconsistent at present. He got a great draw with Taylor three weeks ago and looked coolness personified, but has subsequently lost two weeks in a row, looking rattled and in danger of overheating. Last week his 3 dart average fell to its lowest of the tournament so far on 92.62. James Wade has also shown inconsistency with two weeks of marvellous form, beating the other two players that form the triumvirate of the darting world, Taylor and Barneveld, followed by a 91 average in drawing to bottom of the league Klaasen. Wade leads the head to head results 8-5.

Phil Taylor vs Wayne Mardle

The last game shows an amazing difference in the 3 dart averages, with Phil Taylor a full 16pts ahead of Mardle and ahead of him on all other stats as well. Taylor has not won in the last three weeks and will be gunning to put that right with an emphatic performance. On the handicaps Taylor is best price evens -4.5 legs and that will appeal to some, with Taylor winning 23-2 in the head to head scores. Taylor was rattled last week, accusing King of throwing darts while he was retrieving his from the floor, and Mardle will use all his sideshow antics to also try and affect Taylors game.
