As the NFL enters the sharp end of the season, Fletch takes a look back at his pre-season predictions
Back in August I did a preview of the divisions and offered my long term pointers for what I thought a selection of NFL teams would do this year.
Of course over the course of a season such views are hostages to fortune. They cannot be altered as more information and results happen, but I think it is valuable to analyse early thoughts and see how right or wrong I was.
What I will state though is that our weekly betting on individual matches as been HIGHLY PROFITABLE yet again. Trading on NFL is a great way to make money and we have done extremely well trading the live matches and also very well picking straight up winners for those disinclined to stay up till the early hours.
AFC
New England Patriots – picked them for the play-offs and Division champions and they were our long term bet for the Superbowl. EXCELLENT
Indianapolis Colts – Picked them to lose more games this year as they were a target and some players had moved on for more money elsewhere, as Peyton Manning dominates the salaries there. WON 13 LOST 3 and struggled much more. MIDDLING TO GOOD
Tennessee Titans – my surprise team to watch this year and made the wild card playoff and lost. WON 10 LOST 6 — GOOD
San Diego Chargers – play-off guaranteed was the call and they scraped it but are now looking in good form. GOOD
Denver Broncos – strugglers was my thought in August. WON 7 LOST 9 and never fired as they bedded in new QB. GOOD
Kansas City Chiefs – easily opposable was the gist and they were with a 4-12 record. GOOD
Pittsburgh Steelers – Much improved on last year’s 8-8 record and my shock pick to do well. Came 5th in Division and earned wild card, losing to Jaguars by two points. Record was 10-6. GOOD
Jacksonville Jaguars – Did not fancy them then – though they would be a team to keep eye on. Ended up doing well and now in play-offs POOR
New York Jets – Was wary of these Jets and it depended on RB Jones as to how they went. Did not expect them to be so bad though with record of 4-12. MIDDLING TO POOR
Baltimore Ravens – playoff bound but no further was my tip as I pinpointed a weak offense. They turned out weak all over and suffered injuries. POOR
NFC
Dallas Cowboys – was wary and put Tony Romo and defense as the keys. They have excelled. MIDDLING TO POOR.
Philadelphia Eagles – Oppose was the rule with these and they struggled to a poor 8-8 record. GOOD
New York Giants – these were my sell in the Division and it did not work as they are now in the play-offs. TERRIBLE
Chicago Bears – good side but little offense meant not Superbowl material. As it transpired they were poor with 7-9 record. AVERAGE
Atlanta Falcons – Vick in jail was all I said. No more was necessary as they endured a terrible season both on and off field. GOOD
NFC SOUTH – worst bunch in the whole league. Lived up to that although Tampa Bay picked up a wild card and lost. GOOD
Seattle Seahawks – best side in Division was the call and they proved it in coming third in the conference. Still going strong into this week. GOOD
Overall I am content with how my pre-season analysis panned out. Some were easy – Falcons and Patriots but I did have a couple of bolters like the Titans and Steelers and three good ones to oppose that others fancied in Eagles, Denver and Kansas.
Play-off matches later this week so let’s start the New Year with some good calls. 2007 was great on NFL – let’s make it same again for 2008
