Tom Allen shares his selection from the first round of midweek fixtures of the new season
Just one selection from the midweek games; a tentative play on Fulham to get the better of a troubled Bolton at Craven Cottage.
Lawrie Sanchez’s side were unfortunate to let a lead slip late on at the Emirates on Sunday but there was plenty of encouragement about the way they performed and I think they will have been buoyed by that effort. I like their new signings, they now have a variety of options up front, and can continue their decent home record of recent seasons by picking up their first points of the new campaign.
Their opponents on Wednesday evening struggled badly on the opening day and even though they rallied against Newcastle to avoid humiliation in the second half, Sammy Lee must have watched on in horror at their overall display.
Wanderers built a reputation as being tough to break down under Sam Allardyce but they were ripped apart at the Reebok on Saturday and although the score line may not be quite as emphatic, I do expect them to once again leave empty handy.
Tipped by many to flirt with relegation, they have a relatively gentle start to the season and will be need to get some points in the bag quickly before they face the bigger clubs.
