Chesterfield set the standard early on after beating Bournemouth. Derek Niven on 47, Colin Larkin after 62 minutes and Paul Shaw in added time scored the goals that sent the 12/5 Spireites to the summit of League One.
Leyton Orient suffered an opening day defeat at Port Vale following their promotion. Striker Leon Constantine netted after 43 and 72 minutes for the even money Valiants before Akpo Sodje, who made his debut, scored a third on 78.
Cheltenham Town made a mockery of the 9/2 odds available for them before kick off by beating Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium. Kayode Odejayi opened the scoring after 48 minutes and Grant McCann struck on 54. Pint sized striker Leon Knight halved the deficit 13 minutes from time but the Robins held on for victory.
Huddersfield Town, one of the pre season favourites, were beaten 2-1 by Gillingham. Matt Jarvis opened the scoring for the 13/10 Gills after 57 minutes and new signing Dean McDonald struck a second 10 minutes later. Terriers striker Gary Taylor-Fletcher set up a tense finish with nine minutes remaining.
Leroy Rosenior got off to a winning start as manager of Brentford as his side beat Blackpool. Oli Skulason scored the game’s solitary goal for the 11/10 Bees 16 minutes from the end.
Rotherham United are set to struggle this season after a first day defeat by visiting Brighton & Hove Albion added to their 10 point deduction woe. Alex Revell struck the 6/4 winner for the visitors after 43 minutes.
Substitute Enoch Showunmi scored the winning goal against Scunthorpe United on his debut for Bristol City. Former Luton Town striker Showunmi fired in on 69 to seal a winning bet at odds of 6/10.
Over 12,000 people, the largest crowd for 35 years, witnessed Carlisle United beat Doncaster Rovers at Brunton Park. Paul Murray’s early strike after four minutes proved decisive as the Cumbrian’s earned a 6/4 win.
Bookmaker’s favourites Nottingham Forest beat Bradford City 1-0 at the City Ground. Julian Bennett’s goal after 10 minutes was enough to win the match at odds of 7/10.
Ronnie Moore began his tenure as Tranmere Rovers manager in winning fashion by beating old club Oldham Athletic at odds of 11/10. Last season’s top goal scorer Chris Greenacre fired in the only goal of the match on 24.
Crewe Alexandra were held to a 2-2 draw at the Alexandra Stadium by newcomers Northampton Town. Ryan Lowe gave the Alex a lead after 7 minutes but the prolific Scott McGleish levelled terms five minutes later. Crewe took the lead again through David Vaughan after 19 minutes but Andy Kirk ensured a share of the points at 12/5 odds three minutes before the interval.
Millwall snatched a point against Yeovil Town to earn new manager Nigel Spackman a draw in his first match in charge. Summer signing Wayne Gray put the Glovers in front after 35 minutes but Lions striker Darren Byfield earned a draw at 5/2 with eight minutes left on the clock.
