Champions League

Tom Allen looks at Tuesday night’s action and correctly predicts goals in Athens

Spot on tipping from Tom here as Olympiakos ran out 3-0 home winners against Werder Bremen.

Champions League futures to be decided this week with the final round of group matches.

Man Utd and Chelsea have already qualified as pool winners but Arsenal need a win on Wednesday to have any chance of topping Group H. Liverpool, however, are in a far more perilous position and Rafa Benitez’s side must win to guarantee progression. A draw may well do, but the Reds won’t want to be relying on Besiktas triumphing in Portugal.

A sloppy start to their campaign has been somewhat repaired with convincing victories over the Turks and Porto but needing a win away from home to advance is far from ideal and Liverpool fans are in for a nervous night.

It is quite straightforward elsewhere, where Real Madrid and Olmypiakos should qualify from Group C, but if there is a bet to be had it could pay to side with goals in the Greek capital.

Werder Bremen travel to Athens to take on the Super League Champions and knowing that they must win to pip their hosts and make the last sixteen, the visitors are sure to go for it from the start. They remain one of the most attractive sides in Europe to watch and these two always play on the front foot.

I would not be surprised to see a goal fest materialise in a ‘whoever scores last goes through’ type scenario and the 1.80 with Stan James about the net being found on at least three occasions will do. Were the Germans to grab an early goal then the game could open right up.
