Tom Allen on the second of two midweek Carling Cup semi-final match-ups, Arsenal v Spurs
Bang on from Tom here as the two North London sides battled out a 1-1 draw at the Emirates
Yet another chance for Spurs to try to get one over their bitter rivals on Wednesday and it is the second consecutive year that the two have met at the semi-final stage in the Carling Cup.
As he has done so often, it is once again likely that Arsene Wenger will field a youthful starting XI in this competition but that has not stopped Arsenal in the past and they are so talented that only a fool would write them off. I am no fool, but the 2.00 about them gaining a first leg advantage does not appeal and at the same price there appears to be a bet that offers greater value.
League encounters between these two in recent seasons have produced an avalanche of goals but the first leg of a semi-final is a dangerous beast; neither wants to be out of the tie after 90 minutes. That is particularly applicable to the away side and, although they let in plenty, I think conceding no more than one goal will be Juande Ramos’s priority.
I have watched Arsenal closely in recent matches and although they keep on winning, have failed to impress me. A team similar to the one that can be expected to play on Wednesday was laboured at Burnley on Sunday and the Spurs players know they will not get a better chance to beat their neighbours. The second leg at the Lane should be a cracker and I expect the tie to be finely poised for the return.
A low scoring draw or narrow Arsenal victory looks on the cards and the even money about there being under 2.5 goals will do.
