Brighton Grosvenor Casino

Brighton, bohemian capital of the south coast, is home to the Grosvenor Casino

With a vibrant nightlife and thriving music scene, the traditional British seaside town of Brighton has always been a popular destination for those in search of a place to let their hair down and have a good time. And with eight million tourists passing through per year – including plenty of stag parties – it’s not surprising that the local casinos are full of value on any given weekend.

Poker players have two real options in Brighton: The Rendezvous at the Marina and the Grosvenor on Grand Junction Road on the seafront. Both offer a good range of tournaments and cash games, and while the former has a bigger focus on festivals for the more serious player, the Grosvenor offers a little something for everyone with tournaments ranging from a £5 rebuy on Tuesdays and Sundays right through to the £1,000 main event when the GUKPT rolls into town. While that flagship event is the only regular festival to hit the Grosvenor, there have been others in the past. Last December’s Winter Festival boasted £100 and £250 hold’em events, while APAT events have also been hosted at the venue.

The main focus at the Grosvenor is on affordable poker tournaments, with a healthy mixture of freezeout and rebuy options throughout the week. The £25 bounty freezeout on Friday nights is normally good value with plenty of runners, while the casino guarantees a prizepool of at least £3,000 on Saturday nights if 60 players sign up for the £10 rebuy. Registration for all tournaments closes temporarily ten minutes before start time, but alternates are usually permitted for the first two blind levels, space permitting.

Brighton’s Grosvenor doesn’t look too plush from the outside compared to some of its UK rivals, but once inside any fears are quashed – the casino itself is a modern affair with slick presentation. True, the card room isn’t the biggest you’ll come across by a long stretch, but there’s space for 120 runners and the games are run in an efficient manner by generally friendly and helpful staff.

Cash games tend towards no-limit hold’em, but given enough demand more adventurous games can be spread, including pot-limit Omaha and dealer’s choice.
