The World Series has opened shop, for the 47th time, and tens of thousands of players have descended on Vegas to battle for poker’s most coveted prize, the gold bracelet. Our cover star has already won one – his fourth actually – and Jason Mercier is at the heart of one of the biggest stories of the summer.
He made a prop bet with fellow PokerStars pro Vanessa Selbst, putting up $10k of his money at odds of 180/1 to win a potential $1.8m. To cash in he needs to win three bracelets. After winning Event #16, the $10k 2-7 Draw, Mercier moved onto Event #20, the $10k Razz, and almost won that too, finishing second. At the time of writing this he’s chip leader in the $10k HORSE with 14 remaining. It’s an incredible performance and it’s created the biggest – and possibly most controversial sweat – in WSOP history.
A clearly rattled Selbst tried to buy out for $1k before the WSOP but Mercier refused. After his first bracelet win she offered $100k and again Mercier said no deal. Read more about it here.
