UK pro Richard Ashby wins $1,500 Seven Card Stud event for his first WSOP bracelet
UK pro Richard ‘Chufty’ Ashby has won event #21, $1,500 Seven Card Stud for $140,467. It’s another incredible result for UK players this summer, who have already equalled last year’s record-breaking tally of three WSOP bracelets. Praz Bansi and James Dempsey earlier won events before Ashby’s weekend triumph.
It was 38-year-old Londoner Ashby’s first WSOP title, his pair of queens besting Christine Pietsch’s pair of tens in the final hand. Ashby had previously claimed 8 WSOP cashes but no bracelets. He entered the final table third in chips, and came through to beat the likes of Jon ‘PearlJammer’ Turner and Sorel Mizzi before finally eliminating the US-based Pietsch in second place for $86,756. Pietsch would have become the first woman in two years to win an open event at the WSOP.
Ashby’s WSOP earnings now total $219,748. Despite specialising in Pot Limit Omaha Ashby is no stranger when it comes to stud games, having won the European Masters Seven Card Stud event in 2009. He is usually known for playing high stakes cash games online but can clearly adapt to tournaments, being as he has already earned nearly $800,000 in tourney winnings since 2003. “I play a lot of Mixed Games. But maybe I should be playing Stud a little bit more, after this.”
