Finnish pro Jani Vilmunen has won the £5,000 Pot Limit Omaha event at this year’s WSOPE. It’s the first time a player from Finland has won a WSOP bracelet and Vilmunen had to overcome a stacked final table to do so.
With twenty players left, the spotlight was on high stakes legend Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan who was vying with Vilmunen for the chip lead in search of his first bracelet. However, a huge pot developed between both of them which saw Vilmunen cripple Dwan and take an overwhelming chip lead into the final table.
The UK was still in with a chance of a second WSOPE bracelet with Hendon Mobber Ross Boatman, Roberto Romanello and Jeff Kimber all making the final table. It wasn’t to be this time though, Boatman putting up the best show with a 4th-place finish good for £69,030.
Throughout the closing stages Vilmunen always looked in control before getting to heads-up with poker legend ‘The Professor’ Howard Lederer. The two had a see-saw battle with Lederer even grabbing a substantial chip lead and looking likely to win his third WSOP bracelet. Vilmunen was not to be deterred though, and fought his way back to evens before sealing the title with a cooler of a hand where both players flopped a straight in a reraised pot, the Finn’s being the nut straight.
It may be the first bracelet for Vilmunen but he is no stranger to fans of the high stakes PLO games online where he goes under the alias of ‘KObyTAPOUT’ and is one of the internet’s biggest winners.
