Classic battles of the past to be re-enacted
Revenge is on the cards with the launch of a new WSOP event. Titled the ‘WSOP Rematches’, the one-of-a-kind tournament recreates some of the most memorable heads-up battles in the the festival’s history.
Nostalgia will be rife as Chris Moneymaker and Sammy Farha kick of proceedings with the rematch of their 2003 Main Event battle. As we all know, the then amateur Moneymaker managed to satellite his way to poker’s most prestigious tournament before defeating seasoned pro Farha to secure the title and poker immortality.
But the duo will square off once again; this time in a best of three affair. The first game will start with the same stacks as that fateful day back in 2003, and starting stacks will reverse for the second leg. If needed, a third match will begin with equal stacks.
Meanwhile, the second game in the Rematch series will see two titans of the game clash, as Johnny Chan looks to avenge his 1989 defeat at the hands of Phil Hellmuth; denying him of a third consecutive Main Event victory.
Beating Chan gave Hellmuth the record of the youngest Main Event winner, an honour he held until Peter Eastgate’s memorable victory in 2008. But unlike Moneymaker vs Farha, both Chan and Hellmuth will start with equal stacks.
Harrah, the owners of the WSOP, are encouragin fans to visit their Facebook site to decided on a third encounter – with the option of Johnny Chan vs. Erik Sidel (1988), Greg Raymer vs. David Williams (2004), Jamie Gold vs. Paul Wasicka (2006) and Jonathan Duhamel vs. John Racener (2010).
Each match offers a taste of what could have been and Pokerplayer keep you posted as the action unravels.
