Tennessee's Bryan Sumner gets the better of Daniel Negreanu at World Poker Tour stop in Mississippi
Bryan Sumner emerged victorious from the WPT open in Tunica after coming out on top in an intense heads-up battle with poker superstar Daniel Negreanu.
The final hand of the five-day main event, which had a buy in of $10,000, saw Negreanu’s A-3 trailing Sumner’s pocket 8s after the Canadian moved all-in from the button.
Sumner hit a set on the flop to leave Kid Poker in terrible shape, and although picking up an inside straight draw on the turn provided Negreanu with a faint glimmer of hope, the hand held up on a final board of 8-5-4-3-Q.
In an exciting tournament held at the Goldstrike Casino in Tunica, Mississippi, Sumner, from Tennessee, beat 294 other hopefuls and a world class final table to take the spoils.
The win earned Sumner a first place cash prize of $913,986, a $25,000 seat at the WPT Season 5 Championship at the Bellagio and the much-coveted gold and diamond WPO championship bracelet, whilst Neagreanu’s second place finish netted him $502,691.
But perhaps the big story is that Danieal Negreanu was one place away from a result that would have bolstered his credentials as arguably the biggest player in the world game today.
