West Wynns it!

Tim West beats stellar field in Vegas

The $5,000 Wynn Classic tournament drew to a close this weekend, as the 212-strong field was whittled down to a stacked final table that included seasoned pros Annette Oberstad, Eric Froehlich and Carter King. But it was the American Tim West that pocketted the $318,738 winner’s cheque.

The youngster had just shy of $1 million in career earnings coming into the event, and eclipsed his previous career-best cash of $188,000 at the Five Diamond World Classic in 2006. But he had to see off poker megastar Obrestad in the process.

The duo started heads-up with a fairly equal chip count and Obrestad looked in decent shape to cripple West’s stack with when he called her Qh-Ts shove on a Qs-6s-3d board with Ks-9s. The turn brought a blank but a rivered Kc ended Obrestad’s hopes, handing West the win with top pair.

Oberstad now has almost $4 million live earnings, not bad considering she only started playing live tournaments in 2006.

Other notable casualties included Phil Helmuth (19th), Men ‘The Master’ Nguyen (11th) and Billy Kopp (12th).

The final table standings were as follows:

1 Tim West $318,738
2
Annette Obrestad $215,922
3
Matthew Waxman $120,814
4
Max Steinberg $71,974
5
Eric Froehlich $51,410
6
Vasili Lazarou $41,128
7
Carter King $30,846
8
Francisco Braga $20,564
9
John Kim $17,944
