British pro wins £55k first prize, picking up right where he left of at the end of 2012
The first Genting Poker Series Event of the year went off with a bang after Englishman, Julian Thew claimed yet another major victory. Taking place at the Genting Club, Star City in Birmingham, the unstoppable winning machine delivered the kind of performance that people have come to expect. The win which is his first of 2013, was worth £40,120 following a four-way deal.
It’s been a mere two months since the man from Nottingham claimed his last big win and we have little doubt he will follow this one up in the very near future. Attracting a bumper field of 590, up 60 per cent on last year, this time round the total prize pool for the £400 buy-in event was just shy of £250k.
Heading into the final table there were plenty of big name players standing in Thew’s way, most notably Hendon Mob legend Ross Boatman and Genting Poker’s very own pro, Daiva Barauskaite, but it was Dusk till Dawn regular Barry Neville who would prove Thew’s toughest opponent. The man from Sheffield who is no stranger to the business end of big tournaments was at his best, but in the end Thew’s experience would prove too strong, and the man from Nottingham would win yet another title.
“It is a great way to start the year and Genting have created a fantastic series here,” said Thew after his win. “I played a few legs last year, and I shall be going to Newcastle and Sheffield for certain.”
Here is how the final table finished up:
1. Julian Thew – £40,120
2. Barry Neville – £32,620
3. Ross Boatman – £30,620
4. Ceri Rees – £31,120
5. Alex Lindop – £14,750
6. Kourosh Radfar – £11,800
7. Alex Goulder – £9,440
8. Daiva Barauskaite – £7,080
9. Cherie Joy – £5,130
Following this the tour switches to Newcastle’s Genting Casino, which will host the event next event which takes place between 21 – 25 March.
