$600k win caps off remarkable week for Shulman family
Poker has a new first family after Allyn Jaffrey-Shulman, wife of Barry Shulman and step-mother to Jeff, beat a record-breaking 4,128 runners to win the $1,000 WSOP Seniors Event and over $600k.
Jaffrey-Shulman added to her family’s WSOP history thanks to a stunning victory over arguably the most recognisable final table in Seniors history. With two-time bracelet winner Hoyt Corkins and 2008 Main Event legend Dennis Phillips among the final four, Jaffrey-Shulman shocked the poker world when she became the first female bracelet winner in an open event since Vanessa Selbst back in 2008.
The ex-criminal defense attorney-turned CardPlayer writer saw off Phillips heads-up, ending a record 249-event drought for women at the World Series. And her victory topped off an unforgettable week for the Shulmans, with both Barry and Jeff final tabling events just days before.
It wasn’t all plain sailing for Jaffrey-Shulman, though, and Phillips was just one card away from victory when he got it in with Queens against Jaffrey-Shulman’s K-6. But a rivered straight would snatch victory from Phillips’ hands, and from there Jaffrey-Shulman didn’t look back.
‘I’m happy for myself, but I’m happy for all women that I won this,’ she said afterwards. ‘I’d like to see more of them out there playing, feeling comfortable with going at it with the boys and winning.’
As well as the career-best first prize, Jaffrey-Shulman also walked off with the Seniors Event Golden Eagle, passed on from champion to champion each year.
