Rupert Elder wins EPT San Remo

two in a row for the Brits

It’s all over in San Remo and we have a British champion for the second succesive year. Last year it was the turn of Pokerstars pro Liv Boree, but this time the glory belonged to Rupert Elder.

Navigating his way through the 987-player field, Elder, who plays online cash games for a living, came into the final table as a chip leader and despite a few minor setbacks along the way went on to claim the €930,000 first prize and a ticket to next weeks’ EPT Grand Final in Madrid.

Going into the heads-up battle, Elder held a 2-to-1 chip lead over 20-year old German pro, Max Heinzelmann, and despite being one card away from a second-place finish when he was all-in on the turn with a set of sixes, only to be shown a straight by Heinzelmann, but when the river paired the board, Elder scooped the huge pot and never looked back after that.

But it was Heinzelmann who captured a lot of the headlines, the second place finish was his second in a row, after finishing runner-up at the recent EPT Berlin and the back-to-back second place finishes have earned the young German €1,100,000.

Elder’s win adds to an already fantastic year for British poker, which has so far seen Toby Lewis, David Vamplew and Roberto Romanello all capture EPT hardware this season.

The question is can he make it three in a row at next week’s EPT Grand Final in Madrid or perhaps he can go one better and win.

Here’s how the final table finished:

1. Rupert Elder €930,000
2. Max Heinzelmann €600,000
3. Xuan Liu €360,000
4. Max Lykov €290,000
5. Francesco De Vivo €220,000
6. Massimiliano Manigrasso €170,000
7. Costantino Russo €125,000
8. Roberto Spada €81,950
