The Sky Poker Tour hit Luton at the weekend, drawing a sell-out field of 150 players to the G Casino. Included amongst them were a few celebrity players such as racing pundit John McCririck, glamour girl Kitty Lea and former Spurs footballer Micky Hazard – who went on to make the final table. But, ultimately, it was a member of the PokerPlayer.co.uk team Ross Jarvis who took the event down, winning £4,000.
Jarvis came into the final table third in chips but could have been eliminated on the bubble – hitting a three-outer on the river to stay alive. With a fast structure meaning that all chip stacks were relatively short compared to the blinds the action was fast and thick, with all-ins everywhere. Phil Jenkins was eliminated in 4th place when he shoved his short stack with 7-8 into Jarvis’s pocket Queens. From that point Jarvis began to build up a sizeable lead on the competition, frequently 3-betting David Crane who was forced to fold a number of times.
With his stack diminished Crane shoved all-in over the top of another Jarvis button raise. The PokerPlayer writer quickly called with A-T which held up against Crane’s A-6 to send the action heads-up. Those expecting a back and forth contest were disappointed as it was over in just one hand, all the chips flying in preflop. Jarvis held A-9, Stroud J-T and the Ace-high held up to win the title.
Jarvis, who also captured the Virgin Poker Tour Newcastle tournament in 2009 was thrilled with the win, ‘I’m really happy with how I played and it’s always great to win a tournament. My intention was just to put pressure on the other final table players as much as I could and try to build up a chip lead.’
With the win Jarvis also secured a place in September’s Sky Poker Tour Grand Final, ‘I’m looking forward to that and hope to make it two from two on the Sky Poker Tour.’
The tour now moves to Glasgow on 8th May. Entry to the event is available only via online satellites at www.skypoker.com. Sign up now and qualify today!
