Melbourne’s Karl Krautshneder has beat 214 poker hopefuls to become the PokerStars.net Australia New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT) Adelaide Champion. Pocketing $ 170,215 AUD he becomes the point leader in the ANZPT player race.

Searching for the next local Poker Star, the ANZPT is going to Australia and New Zealand’s leading casinos. The tour is league based which means there is a point system awarding players for every event they enter as well as for the position they finish in each tournament. The first season will run up until July this year.

Karl Krautshneder won his way to Adelaide via PokerStars and he has been playing poker for four years. He lives in Melbourne where he plays regularly at Crown Casino and online. Karl is a drug and alcohol clinician, helping council people dealing with addiction. His daughter has been following his progress keenly via the PokerStars blog while back home in Melbourne.

“I feel fantastic after winning my way here on PokerStars for only $ 31; the whole tournament has been so exciting for me. I am definitely going to playing in more of these, especially as I am now the point’s leader. I really want to play in some of the APPTs in Asia and this gives me a great chance to get there,’ said Karl. When asked what he would be doing with the winnings he said: ‘I want to take my daughter on a holiday, after the credit card has been taken care of.’

The tournament started with 215 players, 14 of those travelling from overseas, generating a total prize pool in excess of half a million dollars. Some of Australia and New Zealand’s brightest poker players travelled to Adelaide, including Team PokerStars Pros Joe Hachem and Lee Nelson. There was also the PokerStars Team Australia players; Emad Tahtouh, Eric Assadourian, Grant Levy, Tony Hachem and Celina Lin, all battling to become the first winner of an ANZPT event.

The final table was a mix of Australia’s experienced poker players alongside some who were making their final table debut. Tony ‘Bond18’ Dunst and Julius Colman were the most experienced players, both having results in WSOP and WPT events. Young Melbourne player James Broom, who last year won Crown Casino’s Melbourne Championships, was one of the more dangerous players at the table. Celina Lin, a Team Australia PokerStars sponsored player, was making her first appearance at a final table in Australia. Celina has really developed her game in the last few years. She had a fantastic tournament and has quickly established herself as one of Australia’s premier female players.

After a very quick final table Karl found himself heads-up against Tony Dunst after only four hours of play. The title was decided when Tony’s two pair was rundown by Karl’s flush draw when the seven of clubs arrived on the river.

PokerStars.net has agreed to give $5,000 to Karl Krautshneder’s former clinic – Berry Street Victoria. The clinic helps under privileged children and to honour Karl’s ten years of dedication to the centre PokerStars.net would like to show their support to his hard work.
