The big stories from this week’s high-stakes cash games
Player of the week: Daniel Alaei
Daniel Alaei is a newcomer to our humble little nosebleed review, but this week the two-time WSOP bracelet winner arrived in style, banking $532,000 in just over 1,000 hands.
Alaei’s online results have been a tad disappointing in recent years. Since 2007, the 28-year-old has never been in profit on Full Tilt, and 2011 wasn’t looking like bucking the trend.
But this week, the WPT winner re-established himself on the high-stakes scene, clawing his way out of a $1,100,000 career hole to sit $580,000 short of breaking even.
However, the real fireworks this week weren’t taking place at Alaei’s tables. Oh no, this week Scott ‘URnotINdanger2’ Palmer and Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan provided the most exciting action, clashing in several six-figure pots to the delight watching railbirds.
Last week, Palmer crushed the competition over at PokerStars, and despite losing the second leg of his two-part tussle with Viktor ‘Isildur1’ Blom in the SuperStar Showdown, he boosted his bankroll thanks to a good old fashioned durrrr spanking early this week.
The duo scrapped on Full Tilt’s PLO tables, with monster pots going either way in the early rounds. But when the bell tolled and the players called an end to their bloodbath, Palmer was the clear victor, banking roughly $300,000.
Hand of the week:
This week’s top hand comes from the Durrrr vs. Palmer scrap, and marked one of the biggest seen so far in 2011.
With the blinds $300/$600, Dwan had the button and raised pot. Palmer three-bet the big blind, Dwan called and the flop came down 10s-9d-4h. Palmer bet $7,200, Dwan called and the was a Jd, completing straight draws and opening up backdoor flush possibilities.
Palmer bet $21,000 and was instantly repopped to $90,000 before three-betting all-in. Dwan called off his remaining $10,800 with Qd-8s-7d-4d for the second nuts with a Queen-high flush draw, but Palmer tabled the nuts with Ah-Kd-Qh-Qs for an Ace-high straight.
The duo ran it twice, but a 5s and 7s were no help to Dwan, who watched on as Palmer raked in a $228,000 monster.
