25-year-old becomes first double UKIPT winner
Nick Abou Risk had to overcome Mother Nature to lift his second UK and Ireland Poker Tour title in four months, as the Canadian-based Dubliner became the first ever two-time UKIPT champ in a snowy season opener.
266 players arrived in Galway hoping to get their hands on the €67,100 first prize, but adverse weather conditions across the UK and Ireland forced organisers to delay proceedings by 24 hours in order to allow big names, such as Liv Boeree, to take their seats.
But when play did finally commence, Risk worked his way into a dominating chip lead, arriving at the final table with a 500,000 cushion on nearest rival Eoin Olin, before seeing off local amateur Trish Mallin heads-up for his second title following success in Edinburgh last August.
The final table payouts were as follows:
1 Nick Abou Risk €67,100
2 Trish Mallin €41,300
3 Maurice Silke €25,250
4 Vytenis Navickas €18,600
5 Eoin Olin €15,400
6 Dan Rankin €12,725
7 Roar Aspaas €10,100
8 Johan Meyer €7,975
9 Aonghus Farrell €5,700
