Online qualifier pockets €700,000 prize
A 20-year-old German student has won the EPT Vienna for €700,000 ahead of 587 runners and some of poker’s biggest names.
Michael “mae9690” Eiler overcame a tough final table, which included Daniel Negreanu, to add an EPT title and €700,00 to his Sunday Million win earlier this year for $200,000.
Eiler’s moment came just over an hour into his heads-up battle with Czech pro Martin Hruby, when the young economics student flopped a nut flush to crush Hruby’s pockets deuces.
“I had a few ups and downs but the turning point was when Negreanu busted,” Eiler, who was playing in his first ever EPT event, said after his victory. “He was probably the strongest player at the table and he had a lot of chips.”
Negreanu, who came into the final day with a sizeable chip lead and the chance to overtake Phil Ivey atop the all-time money list, eventually busted in fourth place after the deck turned cold late into the €5,300 event.
The Canadian would have become only the third player to hold three EPT titles, alongside Gavin Griffin and Roland de Wolfe, had he held on for victory.
The EPT Vienna final table standing were as follows:
1. Michael Eiler €700,000
2. Martin Hruby €470,000
3. Konstantinos Nanos €265,000
4. Daniel Negreanu €175,000
5. Luca Cainelli €140,000
6. Andreas Wiese €105,000
7. Matthias Lotze €76,000
8. Bruno Launais €60,000
9. Kirill Zapletin €44,000
