APT side games biggest ever seen
Some of poker’s biggest names flocked to Macau for a chance at the HK$1.68 million ($215,000) Asian Poker Tour title this month, but the attention quickly shifted to the ludicrous side games developing away from the cameras.
While 18-year-old Zhang Dan Peng claimed his first APT event, poker megastars Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan and John Juanda found themselves embroiled in one of the biggest no limit cash games ever recorded, with more than HK$40 million ($5,158,000) reportedly splashing around the felt.
The action was so loose and unexpected that Dwan was seen trying to bust himself out of the APT event so he could spend more time with his new opponents. And the latest chip counts revealed that Dwan and Ivey were reportedly up over $3 million between them, with blinds reaching an astronomical HK$50,000/$100,000 ($6,448/$12,897) at one stage.
Reporters were alerted to the nosebleed action by APT Tournament Director Matt Savage after he posted details of the side game online.
‘Despite the light turnout at the Asian Poker Tour Macau, the cash games are some of the biggest in history as Tom Dwan, Phil Ivey, Chau Giang, and John Juanda are playing HK $5,000-10,000 with some Chinese businessmen,’ wrote Savage. ‘The game plays much bigger and there was about HK$40 million on the table last night when I saw the game.’
