The opening event of the 2009 WSOPE is in the books and JP Kelly has become the first UK player to win a WSOPE bracelet in the events’ three-year history. Kelly overcame a huge field of 608 players to win the £136,803 first prize and a second WSOP bracelet to go alongside the one he won in Vegas earlier this summer. The young pro will now go down in history as the first UK player to ever win two WSOP bracelets.
The £1,000 NLHE event was a new introduction to this year’s WSOPE schedule and gave players just 3,000 chips to play with. Due to that the eliminations came thick and fast, with JP Kelly ending day one as a monster chipleader with over 100,000. From there, he sailed to the final table but didn’t secure the victory easily after a mammoth heads-up battle with Frenchman Fabien Dunlop. The chiplead swung back and forth on numerous occasions before Kelly dealt a crucial blow, both players getting all-in with flush draws only for Kelly’s king-high flush besting Dunlop’s draw on the river. It was academic from there as JP Kelly confirmed his status as a major world force in tournament poker.
Our congratulations go out to JP Kelly as he continued what has been an incredible year for British poker at the WSOP and WSOPE.
