20-year-old adds $330,000 to his bankroll
In January, Harrison Gimbel announced himself to the poker world after taking down the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure for $2.2 million. But unlike many of today’s young stars, the 20-year-old proved he’s not a flash in the pan this week, beating 289 players to the WPT Florida Regional Series crown and a $330,000 top prize.
The South Florida local needed to overcome a tough field, which included fellow prodigy Jason Mercier, WSOP star Josh Arieh and 2006 WSOP Player of the Year Jeff Madsen, and was lucky to survive the first day when his Q9 donked-out on Adam Adler’s AQ – Gimbel spiking a nine on the river to maintain his push.
“I had said ‘good luck everybody’ and walked away, and they all yelled ‘hey, where you going? You’re not out,'” an embarrassed Gimbel told the Seminole Hard Rock crowd.
Going into heads-up play with Anthony Ruberto, and with more than $150,000 the difference between first place and runner-up, Gimbel agreed to a deal which saw both players walk off with close to $330,000.
But while Gimbel is still too young to gamble in most American states, the win takes his live earnings to $2,641,050, adding to his $1.2 million online. Expect great things when the young pro turns 21 in 2012 and challenges the WSOP crowds at the Rio for the first time.
‘All I had my mind on was first [place].’ A confident Gimbel said after his victory. ‘I couldn’t even tell you what the other payouts were.’
The final table payouts were as follows:
1 Harrison Gimbel $330,000
2 Anthony Ruberto $275,252
3 Fred Goldberg $144,733
4 Raj Vohra $92,103
5 Albert Jinsu Kim $65,788
6 Aaron Schaff $56,577
7 Alex Findlay $43,420
8 Anthony Pope $31,578
9 Allie Prescott $30,262
