Gus Hansen has powered through a field of 747 players to win the Aussie Millions in Melbourne
Gus ‘The Great Dane’ Hansen has won the 2007 Aussie Millions Main Event beating Jimmy ‘Gobboboy’ Fricke in heads-up play on Friday evening in Melbourne.
Hansen wins Aus$1.5 million for his troubles and fittingly won the final hand holding Aces against Fricke’s 9-7.
Fricke took second place in the event for a cash prize of $1,000,000. Fricke played brilliantly throughout the tournament, but Hansen’s chip lead and superior experience ultimately won through in the heads-up battle.
The Aussie Millions, staged at the world famous Crown Casino on the riverfront in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, is now firmly established as one of the major events on the global poker calendar.
Billed as the Southern Hemisphere’s richest poker event the 2007 incarnation featured two weeks of high octane action, culminating in the Aus$10,000 main event.
Kiwi Lee Nelson won last year’s main event and there were plenty of big pros and eager locals in town hoping to take the big one down.
The main event began on 14 January and 747 players battled it out in a hope of reaching the Final Table which kicked offf on 19 January.
The Aussie Millions also coincided with international cricket and tennis in the city and the Crown Casino has been buzzing throughout.
