Index developed to determine best live tournament players
Pros now have a new medium in which to compete, following the launch of the Global Poker Index (GPI). Developed by Federated Sports + Gaming (FS+G) and Epic Poker League commissioner Annie Duke, its aim is to determine the best live tournament player in the world, and it’s being updated all the time.
Current chart-topper is French player Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, with a rating of 2473.13, closely followed by Erik Seidel (2457.36). The ratings of players are calculated by their cash position results in live tournaments over the past 36 months, and a score is awarded to each event based on their buy-in, finishing place percentage, and aging factor.
The first two may seem pretty self-explanatory, but what’s an aging factor when it’s at home? Each individual event a player scores points in will be given an age, with recent events weighted more heavily ‘since the GPI seeks to determine who the best live tournament poker player in the world is today’.
According to the site, the best player is ‘defined by both consistency over time and recent outstanding performance’.
With the Epic Poker League just round the corner, those riding high in the GPI can expect to get an invite to the lucrative series. As ever, PokerPlayer will be there to bring you all the biggest news.
