Irish pro takes it down
Fintan Gavin became the first Irish winner of Season Two of
the UK and Ireland Poker Tour when he took down the Edinburgh tournament. The
lovable Irishman sailed through a field of 519 opponents to bank a £61,500 prize, which he added to total live tournament winnings of over $1million.
Runner-up was British Andrew Hawksby, who put up a strong
fight before being pipped to the post. Gavin got off to a good start when he
was dealt pocket rockets in the second hand of heads-up. His aces held, giving
him a sizeable chip lead. The final hand saw the end for Hawksby after he
called Gavin’s raise on a nine-high flop with 9c-6s, failing to improve his
hand against Gavin’s Jd-9s.
No doubt Gavin was ecstatic to finally win a UKIPT trophy,
but it’ll also have been a red-letter day for runner-up Hawksby, who,
incredibly, was playing in his first ever live tournament. Kudos to all!
