Portuguese native Antonio Matias has won EPT Vilamoura, the first tour event ever to take place in Portugal. The 54-year old travel agency director triumphed against a 322-runner field and posted his first ever live result, pocketing a resounding $603,169.

Matias reached the final table with more than a million chip lead over his nearest rival but was eventually caught up and overtaken by Jeffrey Sarwer when play got to three-handed. However Sarwer did not have much time to enjoy the top spot after a huge clash with Matias which saw Sarwer make an agonising call on a 9c-7h-3c board when he had paired his nine. Unfortunately for him, Matias had gone all-in with pocket tens and the board ran out blank to make him a massive chipleader.

After Sarwer exited in third place, it was left to Pierre Neuville and Matias to battle it out but with almost a 6/1 chip deficit, Neuville was always going to have an uphill struggle. To his credit, Neuville doubled up but could never get any momentum going and the two players got all their chips in on a Jd-7h-8h board. Matias held bottom two pair, Neuville had top pair and a straight draw but the 7c on the turn spelt the end for his tournament and the win for Matias.

The next EPT stop takes place in Prague from 1-6 December.
