Germany on a tear at WSOP
The WSOP is almost over, but for young German pro Dominik Nitsche, the good times are just getting started. Nitsche took down the final event before the $10k Main, shipping the last $1k NLHE tourney for a massive $654,797 payday.
This year’s $1k events have been some of the busiest in WSOP history, and Nitsche had to overcome a whopping 4,620 runners to get his first bracelet. The 21-year-old crushed his final table, seeing off Tennessee native Jonathan Hilton heads-up.
After Pius Heinz’s success last year, and the recent WPT World Championship win for PartyPoker pro Marvin Rettenmaier, Germany are becoming a major force in poker and Nitsche’s win was the second for Deutchland at this series, following Jan-Peter Jachtmann’s $10,000 PLO success.
When three-handed play began in the $1k, Nitsche held over 80% of the chips in play, leaving Alex Cordero and Hilton clawing at each other for second place. Hilton would come out on top, busting Cordero in third before desperately trying to chase down Nitsche.
Hilton hung around for well over an hour before the wunderkind finished the job, though, and on the final hand, the German’s K-5 rivered a King-high straight to crush Hilton’s A-8.
Here’s how Event #59 finished up:
1. Dominik Nitsche $654,797
2. Jonathan Hilton $405,156
3. Alex Cordero $291,725
4. Sebastien Comel $215,592

6. Franklin Johnson $120,748
7. Martin Vallo $91,476
