Main Event winners dominate side events
The Main Event has been something of a poisoned chalice in recent years. One by one, each twenty-something-year-old who gets their hands on poker’s biggest prize has disappeared into obscurity. But Jonathan Duhamel and Joe Cada put an end to that trend at this year’s PCA, waltzing off with a side event each and over $700,000 in winnings.
For Duhamel, victory in the $5k event will hopefully have gone some way to banishing the recent misery of having his home brutality invaded, as the 2010 Main Event champ saw off 158 players to bank the $239,830 prize just days after final tabling the $100k Super High Roller for $313,600.
Duhamel’s victory in the $5k event, along with his success at 2010’s EPT Deauville High Roller, are his sole big-money scores since beating John Racener heads-up at the 2010 WSOP. But Cada has had to wait a little longer for a second major win.
The 24-year-old failed to live up to his image as World Champion after 2009, banking just $140k in two years. But on Thursday, Cada finally ended his drought, overcoming a field of 348 in the $2k event for $175,550.
With just the PCA Main Event to go before players pack their bags and leave Paradise Island, check back with PokerPlayer next week to see who won the $2m first prize.
