Annie Duke becomes the first woman to ever win the NBC Heads-up Championship event
Annie Duke this week became the first woman to ever capture the prestigious NBC Heads-up Championship. Duke defeated Erik Seidel in the final after earlier besting Darvin Moon, Paul Wasicka, Andy Bloch, Jerry Yang and Dennis Phillips.
While the UB.com pro has been in the mainstream spotlight throughout 2009, she has become just as famous for her exploits off the felt after finishing as the runner-up in the USA edition of Celebrity Apprentice. The NBC victory, her first tournament triumph since 2004, will remind the world that her true talent lies in the poker world.
Every year the NBC Heads-up Championship plays host to 64 of the world’s top players who each put up $20,000 of their own money to play. The tournament is invite-only and the list of participants reads like a who’s who of the power players in poker today; Doyle Brunson, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, Tom Dwan and Patrik Antonius to name just a few.
With the win Duke joins an elite list of previous winners that includes Chris Ferguson, Phil Hellmuth, Huck Seed, Paul Wasicka and Ted Forrest.
