London cabbie beats stellar field
A star-studded field turned out for the Walsall leg of this year’s GUKPT event, including Dave Colclough, Paul Jackson, Praz Bansi, but it was London cabbie Alan Mansbridge who managed to last longest out of the172-player field and take home the £50,000 crown.
Following six long hours of final table action, it was Mansbridge and fellow Englishman Martin Holmes who were the two men left battling it out for victory. Mansbridge had the chip advantage when it went heads-up, but it was one hand in particular that sealed Martin’s fate.
When Mansbridge flopped a straight and Martin turned a set of kings all the money went in and left Martin licking his wounds and Mansbridge with a 4-to-1 chip lead. From there it was only a matter of time before Mansbridge took it down.
What was most remarkable about the victory though was that the previous night Mansbridge had been sitting on the smallest chip-stack in the entire field, but somehow from there he managed to chip-up all the way to the final table before eventually claiming the title.
The GUKPT now switches to its Summer Series with the next two events taking place in Brighton and Dundee from the 11th-15th of May.
