Online qualifier survives marathon final table
The UK and Ireland Poker Tour dropped anchor in Manchester last week and out of the 615 players in attendance, few predicted that an amateur from Plymouth would steal the show.
Matthew McDerra took his seat amid a sea of online qualifiers and big name pros all looking to get their hands on the £74,000 first prize. After navigating a lightning-quick final table, in which six players were eliminated in the first three hours, McDerra and fellow PokerStars qualifier Matuesz Warowiec squared off for a record heads-up bout.
After six incredible levels, McDerra all but ended proceedings when he flopped trips fives to crush Warowiec’s top pair, leaving the Pole with little more than a chip and a chair.
No miracle comeback was on the cards and McDerra was happy to see off a tough final table, which also included two-time WSOP bracelet winner JP Kelly, for his first major live score.
Here’s how the final table finished up:
1. Matthew McDerra £74,000
2. Mateusz Warowiec £43,500
3. Robert Angood £27,600
4. Mick Fletcher £20,300
5. JP Kelly £16,000
6. Paul Nash £12,600
7. Owen Shiels £9,500
8. Michael Birt £7,200
