Brit defeats record UK field
Up-and-coming Brit Gareth Walker bagged this week’s UKIPT Nottingham for £109,000 after dominating Brett Angell heads-up.
The Main Event attracted a record 1,058 runners, creating a huge £529,000 prize pool, and 128 players were lucky enough to grab a share. But on a final table packed with eccentric players, Geordie pro Walker fought his way out of the middle of the pack to grab his first title, seeing one-time chip leader Romano Pizzo off in third and Angell heads-up.
Walker, who finished sixth in the Nottingham UKIPT Main Event last year, rapped up the win in the early hours after sucking-out on Angell’s pocket tens with 9c-6c. A Kc-3c-4d-5c-10c board confounded a bad run of cards for Angell, whose Aces were also bust three-handed, but he was still awarded £68,7000 for his efforts.
And Walker wasn’t the only Brit who left Nottingham with a smile on his face. Rochdale pro Jake Cody added to his already impressive resume with his first title of 2010, the UKIPT £1,500 High Roller.
Cody saw off several big name pros and a final table run by Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott to net the £42,000 payday.
The UKIPT Nottingham Main Event final table finished as follows:
1 Gareth Walker £109,000
2 Brett Angell £68,700
3 Romano Pizzo £40,750
4 Tim Bettingen £31,700
5 Mike Hall £24,350
6 Chris Dowley £19,050
7 Thomas Rolfe £13,750
8 David Heaton £7,950
