Lucien Cohen nets €888,000 prize
Household names Viktor Blom, Daniel Negreanu, Jonathan Duhamel and many others were among an EPT record 891-field in France for January’s EPT Deauville, but they were outshined and outfought by 47-year-old pest-control expert Lucien Cohen.
The Parisian amateur, clutching a plastic rat card protector throughout, had to overcome a stacked final table, which included last year’s EPT Vilamoura runner-up Martin Jacobsen and internet pro Alex Wice, en route to his first major title.
After clawing his way into heads-up against Jacobsen, Cohen faced a 5-1 chip deficit but swung the match in his favour after a quick double up, and ended Jacobsen’s hopes when his A-K held over the Swede’s 6-7 a few hours in.
Cheered on by a sizeable local support, Cohen held his toy rat high after every winning pot and was visibly emotional when the €888,000 first prize was presented.
‘I’m very proud. It’s a very emotional moment. I want to say thank you to the organisers, the EPT and my opponents,’ said Cohen. ‘This is one of the best days of my life after my wedding and the day my children were born. I’m happy, happy, happy.’
The final table payouts were as follows:
1 Lucien Cohen €880,000
2 Martin Jacobson €560,000
3 Alex Wice €330,000
4 Julien Claudepierre €260,000
5 Kaspars Renga €200,000
6 Kenny Hallaert €155,000
7 Anthony Hnatow €110,000
8 Ruslan Prydryk €66,800
