Swede banks $51,196 in rollercoaster session
While the Aussie Millions and EPT Deauville were drawing to a close, arguably the biggest match-up of last weekend took place on PokerStars high-stakes tables, as Dan ‘w00ki3z.’ Cates challenged Viktor ‘Isildur1’ Blom in the latest SuperStar Showdown.
Blom has undergone mixed fortunes since signing for the industry’s biggest poker site late last year, and with the SuperStar Showdown challenge carefully poised at 1-1 – his loss to Isaac Haxton cancelled out by beating Tony G this January – Blom was keen to prove his chops against the game’s most prolific internet star of 2010, Dan Cates.
Dropping his familiar junglema12 moniker in favour of ‘w00ki3z’ for the PokerStars tables, Cates coughed up $150,000 and took on an erratic Blom across four $50/$100 tables, with the match capped at 2,500 hands.
And railbirds eagerly anticipating the most exciting heads-up match in recent months weren’t disappointed, with the lead flip-flopping between both players countless times during the match.
But as the hand count edged towards 2,500, it was Blom who looked the victor, no pun intended. Both players were hyper aggressive, and were it not for a few unjust river cards, it could have been Cates with his arm raised in victory. Instead the 20-year-old watched on as just over $51,000 was pushed Blom’s way, taking his series record to 2-1.
There were several big name pros watching the battle, with Tony G in particular keen to needle Blom following his loss earlier this year. But Daniel Negreanu had the last word, and there could be a KidPoker Isildur1 battle in the pipeline if the chatbox is anything to go by:
KidPoker: good game guys
KidPoker: well done Isildur
Isildur1: ty
KidPoker: email me later
Isildur1: yep
Isildur1: bye
KidPoker: I have some questions about the rules
Isildur1: kk
