Local amateur pockets $2million Main Event
A 68-year-old shocked the poker world this weekend after seeing off the game’s biggest names to land the Aussie Millions Down Under.
David Gorr already has several small Aussie Millions cashes under his belt, but this weekend the computer industry worker outclassed a 721-strong field to get his hands on one of the most coveted titles in the modern game.
On a final table littered with the best emerging and established talent in poker, all eyes were on superstar Patrik Antonius and internet sensation Chris Moorman, as both players battled for their first major title.
But Gorr put an end to Antonius’ dreams early on, out flopping the Finn to bust him in eight place, and Moorman wasn’t far behind, Gorr striking agian to bust him in seventh.
Gorr annihilated the final table and the eventually found himself heads-up with another up-and-coming British talent, James Keys. But despite a late fight back from the newest RedKings pro, this was to be the Aussie’s day and he became the third straight local to lift the Aussie Millions title when his Kc-4c outdrew Key’s 7c-3c, hitting two pair on the river.
‘It’s quite unbelievable,” said Gorr after winning. ‘I didn’t think that it would happen. I knew I had a chance, but this is just terrific.’
The Main Event brings to a close another stellar year Down Under, and while Keys will be annoyed at walking away with second place, the Brits have been dominant in 2011, netting more than $3million.
