Italy crowned World Cup winners

Luca Pagano’s side see off British challenge

It’ll be years before the words ‘World’ and ‘Cup’ can be mentioned in pubs around Britain without invoking tears or anger, but our nation’s poker players almost changed that this week with a second place finish at the 2011 World Cup of Poker.

Lead by ‘celebrity captain’ and EPT San Remo winner Liv Boeree, the UK fell just short as nine nation’s battled to get their hands on the $100,000 first prize at this week’s PCA.

Each team was represented by four players and in the final hand, the UK’s A-3 ran head first into the Italian’s A-Q after Liv Boeree’s side had battled back from a short stack only to fall at the final hurdle.

The Italians, captained by Luca Pagano, now sit alongside former winners Taiwan, Germany, USA, Poland and Costa Rica in the World Cup of Poker record books.

The final payouts were as follows:

1 Italy $100,000
2 United Kingdom $75,000
3 Ukraine $50,000
4 France $30,000
5 Slovakia $10,000
6 Spain $10,000
7 Argentina $10,000
8 United States $5,000
9 Philippines $5,000
