In November 2005, the poker world was a different place. The boom was in full flow and poker players were aristocracy. One thing was the same though – Phil Ivey was still the boss.
At the Monte Carlo Millions, he won the $25k buy-in event for a cool million dollars, beating Paul Jackson heads-up and wowing the poker world with that incredible hand. Both Ivey and Jackson had air but showed the world you don’t need the best hand to win at poker. You can watch the hand here…
Phil Ivey also took down the $120k seven-handed Full Tilt invitational, that played out in the incredible surroundings of the Salle Francois Blanc room in Monte Carlo. It was shown live on TV but the Fox Sports Network hadn’t counted on Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott. Banned from advertising his website, Devilfish kicked things off by reminding the table of the number of British troops killed by friendly fire in the Middle East. Hellmuth asked Devilfish if he wanted to go to war.
In the end neither of them could defeat Ivey or John Juanda, but Ulliott had the last word when he was eliminated in third, stripping off his dinner jacket to reveal a placard with his website on. Rumour has it he was banned from Fox Sports on the spot.
