The UK poker year comes to a climax at the Vic as Charlie Carrel wins the GUKPT Grand Final
The GUKPT Grand Final always brings the curtain down on the UK poker year, and with a £400k guarantee it also creates one of the toughest fields to navigate. 212 players ponied up the £2,125 buy-in this year, including Sam Trickett, Chris Moorman, Barny Boatman, Toby Lewis and Stuart Rutter – who flew straight in from Amsterdam where he finished 11th in the Masters Classic to take his seat in level 6.
None of these would go on to make the cash but the final table was about as tough as it gets, with 2013 WSOPE Main Event winner Adrian Mateos, 2014 GUKPT Reading winner Paul Vas Nunes, 2009 GUKPT Blackpool winner Pyrian de Mel and previous Grand final tablists William Kassouf, Tamer Kamel and Ben Vinson all among the final nine.
But it was Charlie Carrel, resplendent in what is possibly the loudest shirt ever worn at a final table (and we’re including Johnny Chan) who took the trophy and sole seven-figure score. When asked what he was going to do with the money he said he was going to throw a huge party for all his friends as well as helping out his family.
